Spelbeschrijving
HacX was originally a commercial add-on for DOOM II that was later re-released as a freeware stand-alone game. Unlike many other add-ons, HacX has a completely different story that is not related to DOOM, and shares no art, sound or music with the base game.
The story concerns a brilliant hacker called Danny Evanger, who gets caught by the government but is later released and enlisted to fight the rogue AI called GENIE that Danny was once able to hack. GENIE has created an army of mutants and robots and is bent on taking over the world. Danny will travel across the globe and through cyberspace, fighting this menace.
The developers of HacX have used many DOOM modding tricks to change the game mechanics as much as possible. Many enemies and player weapons not only look but also act differently from anything found in DOOM II, and the level design is much more grounded and realistic-looking, akin to Duke Nukem 3D and other Build engine games. One neat trick adds breakable glass and items such as lamp posts and computer monitors that can also be damaged, bringing HacX even closer to 3D Realms' creations.
There are 21 regular levels plus one secret level in this game. Most of these take place on Earth in different geographies, but a few transitional levels, in yet another unique twist, take the player to the cyberspace, which is both confusing and odd-looking. HacX maintains a good variety of environment designs, not limiting itself to a single set of textures across the levels, which makes it similar to Star Wars: Dark Forces where every mission takes you to another planet.
The original release, version 1.1, requires a copy of DOOM II to run. It was made freeware in 2000 after tepid commercial sales in the 90s. Version 1.2, released in 2010, is completely stand-alone and only requires a DOOM source port to play.
