Spelbeschrijving

This is a much-improved and enhanced re-release of Battlecruiser: 3000 A.D., with an upgraded engine, more content, and multiple bug fixes. As such, this is the recommended version of the game to play.

Just like in the original, you take on the role of a battlecruiser captain in the service of Galactic Command (GALCOM), tasked with keeping peace and order in the Galaxy. You have complete control of the ship and its crew, and should do whatever you see fit to maintain its operations and oppose all hostile forces. You will visit friendly planets and stations to trade and mine for resources, and engage in battles with enemy fleets. Among many scenarios, the player's cruiser might get boarded by enemies, and marines will fight to repel the invasion and protect the captain.

Needless to say, the simulation of this scale is complex, and the ship's systems are not easy to learn. It is much recommended to read the unofficial FAQ by Tim Howgego (please see the links section below), which includes a detailed tutorial, to get a firm a grasp of the game's basics. From there, the possibilities in Battlecruiser: 3000 A.D. v2.0 are nigh endless. The game offers three playing modes: free flight, which is more or less a do-whatever-you-want sandbox; the campaign mode, which requires higher playing skills; and Xtreme Carnage, where you pilot an interceptor craft on a number of combat missions.

Similar to the original game, Battlecruiser: 3000 A.D. v2.0 first saw a physical commercial release, but was declared officially freeware in 2001 when author Derek Smart went on to release another space simulation game, Battlecruiser Millennium. A limited playable demo is also available, provided here for a smaller-scale experience of the game.

There is a native Windows version of Battlecruiser: 3000 A.D. v2.0, but it is unlikely to run satisfactorily on modern Windows systems, so DOSBox is the preferred option. Please note that originally the DOS version was intended to be run under Windows 95/98, and it requires certain tweaks to improve performance in DOSBox.
