Spelbeschrijving
Viking Siege is a computer adaptation of the Northern European board game known variously as Tafl or Hnefatafl. As chess were becoming more popular in Europe from around the twelfth century, Hnefatalf gradually came out of fashion and was forgotten, until only one of its variants remained in play by the Sami people in Scandinavia in the 17th century, when the rules were first recorded. Hnefatafl is mentioned in numerous Scandinavian sagas, but its rules had to be reconstructed based on the 17-century Sami game.
The game is played on a 7x7, 11x11 or 13x13 board, with one player as the defenders, with the central king piece in its "castle", and the other as the more numerous besieging force that surrounds the defenders from all four sides. The objective of the king is to safely escape to any of the border lines of the board, while the attackers need to capture the king by surrounding the piece with their own.
Pieces can move only horizontally or vertically in this game, without any limitation of distance. Capturing is done when two friendly pieces "flank" the enemy by positioning themselves next to it from both sides, either on a horizontal or a vertical row. The king must be surrounded from all four sides to be captured.
Viking Siege can be played against a computer opponent, or between two players at the same computer in hot seat mode.
The game was released and distributed as freeware. A detailed explanation of the rules and strategies is built into the game and accessible from the main menu.
